’Kindred’ Promo Package
FX
____
We were approached by FX to create a promo package for their series ‘Kindred,’ based on the best-selling novel by Octavia E. Butler.
In the story, the main character jumps from present to past and back again against their will, and the package needed to capture the feeling of uneasiness and surreality of seemingly being in two places at once.
____
The driving concept behind the visuals was to create a surreal blending of past and present, where it feels like both are occupying the same space at the same time.
____
The technique couldn’t be a simple cross-dissolve or double-exposure. Through a lot of trial and error, we landed on a nuanced approach that ultimately got us the desired effect.
____
Each vignette featured carefully chosen shots that complimented each other as they transitioned. To mirror the character’s time travel, we always either move from contemporary LA to rural Atlanta or vice versa.
____
Process
____
We did a lot of proof-of-concept tests before the actual shoots in LA and Atlanta to start to nail down the approach.
____
Using drone footage captured by FX and ourselves, we found it was most successful at achieving the desired effect when the two shots had the same camera move and didn’t vary much in scale.
